Teaching Beginning Banjo Students

In this recent article, Pete offers his experienced view of what beginning players should concentrate on to get a good start in playing music. All of his basic-level instruction and materials follow this philosophy. The article is aimed at banjo teachers, but all beginning and even some intermediate banjo players are advised to read it -- and discuss it with their teacher, if they have one.

A New Direction for Teaching and
Learning Bluegrass Music

This Bluegrass Unlimited editorial speaks to how to make it easy and fun to learn to play. Pete's approach varies considerably from mainstream teaching, and here is his compelling rationale for why ensemble skills need to be taught and nourished from the beginning. See what you think.

Pete Wernick's Basic Skills Banjo Camp

Every Winter Pete's hosts a camp designed specifically for the beginning banjo student.

Basic Skills camp, only qualification: If you can change chords smoothly between G, C, and D7 while playing any sort of strum, you can benefit from and enjoy this camp. If you can do the above while maintaining a TITM roll, so much the better.

The main goals of this camp are:

  • Ability to play comfortably with other players, even if only at slow speeds with easy chords (Maintaining a roll while playing is an achievable goal); and
  • Ability to create a solo to a simple bluegrass song (one whose melody you can hum or pick out on the banjo).

Important note: If you don’t have BOTH of the above skills, you are best suited to the Basic Skills camp. This is true even if you can correctly play arrangements from tablature, have been taking lessons for years, know Earl Scruggs personally, etc. etc. These skills are fundamental, without which a person is pretty much a closet player.

Pete Wernick's Jam Camps

Pete will offer jam camps nationwide this spring and summer. All events followed by bluegrass festivals! Pete will show you how to be in a bluegrass jam session, fitting in at your own ability level. You will be jamming the first morning!

Closet pickers, this is for you!

Learn:

  1. How to follow chords to new songs and play along comfortably
  2. The basics of simple soloing-- even when you don’t know the song!
  3. Standard jam procedure and etiquette
  4. Hands-on individualized help.
